Spiddal (An Spideal) lies 18 km west along the coast road (R336) from Galway city. Spiddal is a small village overlooking Galway Bay and the Aran Islands. Spiddal forms part of the Gaeltacht region of Connemara, where Irish (Gaelic) is still spoken.

Activities enjoyed by visitors in the region include sailing, windsurfing and shore fishing. Near Tra na mBan is Shannagarraun wood, designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). This woodland is rich in oaks, hazel, holly and birch, with ferns, mosses and lichens.
