Environmental Education Activites





A quarterly newspage in four local papers to raise awareness of Donegal’s Blue Flag beaches. Detailed important information on the Blue Flag Programme, Water Safety and Beach Bye – Laws.

Beach Eco Days Donegal County Council work together with local community groups, resource centres and environmental education providers to run on beach eco days at, at least 5 blue flag beaches during July and August. 
 School Visits The aim of the school visits is to deliver a schools environmental education programme and to support the Green Schools programme and organise a schools photography competition. Approximately 90 schools will be visited throughout the year.
A number of schools also take a field trip to their local beach to take pictures or to learn about the seashore.
Dog Fouling Awareness To reduce the amount of Dog Fouling on Donegal’s beaches. The campaign will promote the message 'Clean up after you dog, “scoop the poop” when visiting Donegal’s beaches.' Free poop scoops will be distributed at all Donegal County Council offices and by lifeguards when on duty. All lifeguards have been provided with  free poop scoops to be distributed to dog owners as well as advice on their responsibilities. 
Beach users are asked to spend 2 minutes picking up litter when they visit the beach, take a picture of the litter collected & post it on social media with the hashtag #2MinuteBeachClean.
Coca-Cola Clean Coasts Week Coca-Cola Clean Coast Week took place from the 8th to the 17th May 2015. Donegal County Council encouraged local community groups to carry out a beach clean up during Coca-Cola Clean Coast Week. The campaign was promoted through the Council’s Blue Flag Noticeboards, website and through the Council’s community bulletin.
Clean Coasts 
Photography Competition
An Taisce are inviting the public to enter their annual Clean Coasts Photography Competition. Amateur photographers nationwide are being called on to submit a photo of their coastline to be in with a chance of winning a slice of the €4,000 total prize fund. Entries can be submitted online at www.cleancoasts.org 
Blue Flag Certificate for Schools Integrate the Green Schools Day of Action with a local Blue Flag beach. Schools may take a trip to their local beach, learn about the seashore or carry out a beach clean up. Donegal County Council will inform schools about this certificate through the Schools environmental bulletin that is sent to all schools.
